Do the "Apochryphal Gospels" have any merit or are they condemned as heresy?

I know little about them. They bear such titles as The Gospel according to Thomas, Mary Magdalen and so on. I know certain passages are condemned because they portray Jesus in a light not consistent with the Church's understanding. In one story the child Jesus gets annoyed with another boy bullying him and turns him into a frog. Apparently this action is unbecoming of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. What say YOU???
